The Sale of Alcohol

Sunday Prohibition

After doing a hospital visit on Sunday, Genevieve and I did some shopping. I pondered if a place like TLC (The Little Cellar) would be open on Sunday. You see, South Dakota prohibits the sale of alcohol on Sundays...almost.

Walk into a grocery, and you'll find the wine and spirits aisle blocked. Go to Sam's Club, and you are unable to buy the two-gallon (an exaggeration) bottle of Jack Daniels. However, you can, without any prejudice, pick up a six pack of Bud. Of course, there are no such restrictions at restaurants, where you can still get your Cap'n and Coke, if you desire.

Now, this is in no way a complaint. If I want my JD or a bottle of Cabernet, I can very easily wait until Monday and get it. I don't mind the prohibition of alcohol sales on Sundays. It doesn't bother me in the slighest.

However, I am curious: what's the point of limiting the sale of alcohol on Sunday? Why can I buy a Sam Adams but not a Jose Cuervo? Was this limited intended to stifle episodes of drunk driving on Sundays? If so, do you not realize that beer has to be the biggest culprit of drunken escapades? What is the logic in this limiting of alcohol sales?

Yes, I guess you could say I am bothered by this limiting. But it doesn't bother me that I can't get anything except beer on Sunday. What bothers me is that I can't figure out why I can't get anything but beer on Sunday. It's not the fact, but the why behind the fact.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?
