Random Thoughts

27 June 2007

A family friend who went by the name "Uncle John" once told me that I should be journaling my thoughts and ideas. He had just discovered that I was entering the seminary. He said that it would be a good idea so that I could go back to it and find sermon ideas and illustrations. I supposed he's right.

Yeah...he's right, but not just for someone in the ministry or doing any kind of public speaking. It's a good idea for anyone who was to record their thoughts and idea, or anyone who has trouble remembering their thoughts or ideas.

One of the reasons I started doing this "blogging" was just that, to record some of my thoughts and ideas. Now, four years and two months after starting a blog, I FINALLY get to my first random thoughts post. That's not to say I haven't recorded thoughts before...just nothing this random or unrelated.

Public Restrooms
There is, in my opion, a misnomer in public bathrooms. I'm fine with "men's room" and "ladies' room" (any variations of the same—see what Outback Steakhouse calls theirs). No, the problem lies in the name "unisex." To see what I mean, let's break down the name: "uni" meaning "one" and "sex" standing for "gender." A "unisex" bathroom is intended for "one gender," at least, when you look at the term's root meaning. So, whenever I see a unisex restroom, my first thought is always "Which one?" (Yeah, that's sarcasm.) I mean, I know what they mean, but the name/label just seems wrong. "Omnisex" would seem to be more appropriate. I guess the prefix "omni" is too confusing, however.

Evan Almighty
I thought Bruce Almighty was a funny movie. However, before I watched it, I had to get over my prejudice. You see, I thought to concept too outrageous; I guess it's that whole suspension of disbelief thing. Perhaps, in my case, it was more suspension of belief. You see, I found the concept borderline sacrilegious (maybe I still should). Why would God take a vacation and give his "powers" to a sinful human? I guess what finally got me over it was the question "what if?" What if God would do that...maybe not take a vacation, but let someone have some super responsibilities and see what he does?

Now, Evan Almighty is coming out. I'm sure it'll be just as funny a movie. But, God is asking "Evan" to build an ark, and it looks as if the world is in for another flood. I don't like that idea because God promised He wouldn't flood the world again, giving us the rainbow as a sign of that pledge. Let me say that again, God PROMISED that He wouldn't flood the world again, and God remembers His promises...God keeps His promises. Perhaps I need to suspend my belief again, but the "what if" question just doesn't hold any water this time (no pun intended).

Pixar
I like the Pixar movies. They make for good traveling movies for Robert. Especially Cars. Oh, yeah, we got a new car back in March—a 2006 Dodge Caravan—and it has rear-seat entertainment. So, on longer trips we pop in a DVD for the boy. In any case, the Pixar films are good films...good family entertainment. The last three we didn't have on DVD were on sale, so now we have all of the released films on DVD (and a few on VHS). Of course, that'll only last through tomorrow. Friday, their latest film hits Theatres—Ratatouille. As with their other films (with the exception of Finding Nemo—another story), I'm looking forward to it; hopefully, we'll be able to watch it in the theatre.
