Defending the O

Quiet the Criticism

Many are criticizing O for having created an NCAA Tournament bracket and appearing on Leno. They say he should be spending his time on more pressing issues, such as the economy. It sounds as if they want him to spend every waking hour on the country's problems.

While that may sound like a noble expectation, it is completely unreasonable. The man needs some time to be with his family. He needs to hold, hug, and read to his daughters. He needs to spend quality time with his wife, if you know what I mean. He needs some alone time, to improve his bowling game (if you will). How does that old saying go? Bear with my edit: "All work and no play make anyone go crazy."

If we expect him to be able to tackle any problem, he needs to be able to go at it with batteries recharged...with a refreshed attitude. So, let him have his fun. Why is it a big deal that he took 15 minutes to fill out a tournament bracket? Maybe it shouldn't have been publicized so much, or at all.

And as far as his talk show appearance is concerned; I may not have wanted to watch it, but it is (or was) another forum which he could use to keep in touch with his voting constituents (NB: while he is my president, I am not a member of his voting constituency) and the rest of the American people (world population, even) willing enough to listen to him. While he made have made an off-color remark, I cannot fault him for wanting to enjoy the moment as much as using it (feeling the need to use it) as a forum in which to communicate. Let's go in the opposite extreme: would you prefer he stay in the oval office and never talk to the people which he represents as president?

I am one of the many people who will openly say he doesn't like the man. I don't even like using his name (why I've been calling him "O"). But I do respect him for the office he holds and don't envy him for the job he has. So, I say, cut the man some slack when it comes to the leisure side of his life.
