Formula 1 is in Shambles
and it excites me
I have written about my disgust over Formula in the past...countless times. I have thought, time and time again, that the governance of the sport was out of control. The teams agree with me.
Because the sport's governance did not want to compromise, the teams (well, most of them) threatened to walk out. On Friday, they followed through with that threat. When this season is over, they intend to form a rival championship series to Formula 1. Two of the current teams have committed to Formula 1.
Formula 1 was slated to add three new teams next year. Now, if they want a field of 13 teams (26 cars), they'll have to find 8 more teams. That task itself seems overwhelming.
The bigger problem will be the fan fallout that will most certainly accompany the split. I would guess that a majority of fans will follow their favorite teams and drivers. Sure, many will pay attention to both (I will, only to see what's going on), but I suspect that a new Formula 1 will be rather boring and uninteresting.
There will also be many other problems, such as media and sponsorship deals. Accompanying those, and the lack of paying fans, will be the lack of finances.
You can read more about the fallout here (Teams announce breakaway series) and here (Key points of the FIA-FOTA battle).
