It is a great tragedy that so many within our midst want to scrap everything that means Lutheran, but keep the title.

Random Thoughts

15 July 2007

So, a little more time brings us a few more random thoughts. At first, there was something of an entertaining theme. Then, I had a head-shaking thought. That was followed by something a little more on the serious side.

Random Thoughts

27 June 2007

A family friend who went by the name "Uncle John" once told me that I should be journaling my thoughts and ideas. He had just discovered that I was entering the seminary. He said that it would be a good idea so that I could go back to it and find sermon ideas and illustrations. I supposed he's right.

Yeah...he's right, but not just for someone in the ministry or doing any kind of public speaking. It's a good idea for anyone who was to record their thoughts and idea, or anyone who has trouble remembering their thoughts or ideas.

One of the reasons I started doing this "blogging" was just that, to record some of my thoughts and ideas. Now, four years and two months after starting a blog, I FINALLY get to my first random thoughts post. That's not to say I haven't recorded thoughts before...just nothing this random or unrelated.

My Interest is Re-Piqued

Formula 1 and Team McLaren

In high school, I developed an interest in auto racing, and this developed more in my college years. Now, in case you didn't know, I went to high school in the "deep south"—Augusta, GA. So, you're probably thinking I developed an interest in NASCAR (the premier sport of the south, it seems), and you would be wrong. And while its true I followed CART (the predecessor to IndyCar and Champ Car)—I do prefer open-wheeled racing—my real interest was with Formula 1.

Updates

a little explanation of recent events

The last three-plus weeks have been a whirlwind of an adventure. So much has happened—some good, some bad. Where I sit now, things aren't too good; at least, I'm not too happy with the circumstances.

Something We Normally Don't Watch

SNL's TV Funhouse Spoof

First off, I'm not a big Saturday Night Live fan. It used to be good, at least, what I remember of it. But the jokes and skits have really taken a turn that does not please me. I don't like Dora the Explorer, either (her "brother's" "show" isn't all that enjoyable, either). All the screaming and disjointed questions are rather annoying; not to mention the incessant switching from English to Spanish.

So, come Saturday night, I was flipping through the channels and caught this "skit" on Saturday Night Live. Every once in a while they do something called TV Funhouse, which is supposed to be an animated spoof of something else on TV (usually, from what I understand). This night, they spoofed Dora; this has to be the funniest thing I have seen in a long time.

A word of warning, some of the humor may be of an adult nature. It's not that it's all vulgar (there are a couple of spots that may be, one that is for sure), but that the humor is on an adult level, perhaps over the head of most children. This, despite being animated, and a spoof of a children's program.

Another Anti-Spam Measure

adding another layer of precaution

The comment spam in recent weeks has been on the increase. Apparently, they're finding away around the anit-spam measures already in place—although, according to the logs, more is being prevented than is getting through. The funny thing is they seem to be targeting just a couple of entries; most of them are going after "Another Neat Trick or Hack" (an entry about a "hack" I created for Pivot).

So, I've enabled another feature of the Pivot Blacklist: the Spam Quiz. This is a simple question with an answer not readily available to spambots. So, when you want to leave a comment here, you'll simply have to answer another question. No big deal, right?

Superbowl Thoughts

on the media obsession with race

Congratulations to the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts (truth be told, I was hoping for a Chicago-New England Superbowl). Congratulations to Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy. I might actually watch the Superbowl; either way, I'll be cheering for "Da Bears."

It's Great to be a Florida Gator

The University of Florida Gators

It's a good year to be a Gator. First, the basketball team wins the SEC Championship, followed by the National Championship. Then, the football team wins the SEC Championship; now, they've won the BCS National Championship.

Oh yeah, this is the 100th year of Gator football, too. What a way to celbrate!

A Black Day in South Dakota

Red State? Blue State? No! Yellow State!

As it was around the country, yesterday was election day in South Dakota. Aside from all the elected positions to vote for, aside from chosing from Republicans and Democrats (oh, and those others, too), aside from chosing to legislate a longer summer for school children (yeah, how trivial), perhaps the biggest issue on the ballot was that of abortion.

Last Summer, the South Dakota House of Representatives passed a bill (HB1215) that would outlaw all abortions except those that would save the life of the mother. Later that same summer, a petition drive was held, mainly in Sioux Falls, but also in Rapid City (I'm guessing based on the fact they didn't visit little ol' Marion, that the rural parts of South Dakota—that is, the REST OF THE STATE—weren't needed) to place the law before the voters. So, yesterday (and for some, in the days leading up to yesterday), that's what we did. The law was defeated 56% to 44%.
