Just Thought I'd Share
Thanks to RedBox (and a free movie 1-night rental code), I watched a couple of new releases yesterday and this morning.
Push was alright. It didn't get many favorable reviews from "official" critics (a fact I didn't realize until after I rented it). I didn't think it was as bad as some of those reviews. The story behind the movie was good, but it probably could have been produced better. Think Heroes, but with a limited ability set (not a new character with a new ability every week...like Heroes).
It's counterpart release was Knowing. This one was longer and put together really well. I take issue with the movie on a theological level (as I would with Push), but it was a good Sci-Fi movie, nonetheless. I did appreciate, to a certain degree, the use of Ezekiel in the movie and thought it's interpretation/use of angels an interesting one (especially interesting, in a good way, how the angels were portrayed: they weren't just people with wings). One thing I was reminded of with Knowing is how I, matter-of-factly, told a Sunday School teacher many years ago that the end of creation was going to coincide with the Earth being swallowed by the sun; I tried to harmonize what the Bible teaches with what "expert scientists" predict will happen (for your information, I no longer believe what I said those many years ago).
So, I guess if you're on the fence about either of these movies (their release on video was always advertised together), I would say go with Knowing. It's certainly the more entertaining movie. And, it'll make you think a little, too (i.e., it's not mindless entertainment; not completely, anyway).
